The father did not respond immediately. He simply stared at his wife for several seconds, then asked calmly, “If the girl is lying… then why don’t you want to get into the truck with me?” The wife forced a smile. “I just thought it would be better if you went alone.” But the little girl tightened her grip on her father’s hand and said with a trembling voice, “I saw her crouching beside the wheel. She looked around before touching the truck.” The father’s expression changed completely. He was no longer looking at his daughter as if he were trying to calm her down, but as if she were a small witness trying to save his life.
The father slowly walked toward the truck without letting go of his daughter’s hand. He crouched down to look at the front wheel, then turned back toward his wife. She quickly stepped closer. “You’re scaring the girl. She doesn’t like me, so she’s making all of this up.” The little girl shook her head, almost in tears. “I’m not making anything up. I heard her say on the phone that Dad wasn’t supposed to come back home today.” The moment she finished speaking, the wife froze for a brief second. That tiny reaction was enough to send a chill through the father.
The father crouched down again and noticed a small trail of brake fluid leaking onto the gravel. He touched the ground, and his fingers came away wet. He stood up abruptly and looked at his wife. “The brakes really were tampered with.” She went pale but tried to defend herself. “Maybe the mechanic did a bad job.” The little girl immediately pointed at her. “She was wearing gloves earlier. Then she took them off really fast and hid them in her bag.” The father fixed his eyes on his wife’s handbag. For the first time, his trust in her disappeared completely.
The father held out his hand. “Give me your bag.” The woman stepped back. “Are you really going to believe a child before your own wife?” He did not shout, but his voice turned cold. “I’m only going to ask you one more time. Give me the bag.” With no way out, she finally handed it over. Inside was a pair of gloves stained with oil and a small pair of pliers covered in metallic grime. The little girl burst into tears. “I told you the truth, Dad!” The man tightened his grip on the pliers and asked slowly, “Did you really try to kill me?”
The wife’s affectionate expression disappeared completely. Realizing she could no longer deny it, she answered bitterly, “I wasn’t going to let everything end up in your hands and that girl’s.” The father froze. She continued, “Last week, I heard you talking to your lawyer. You’re putting most of the properties and company shares in your daughter’s name. And what about me? After all these years, you were just going to leave me scraps?” The little girl hid behind her father. He finally understood that this had not been an impulsive act. His wife had been planning it for some time and wanted everything to look like a road accident.
The father looked at her as if he were seeing a complete stranger. “All of this for money?” She gave a bitter laugh. “No. Because you decided to push me out of your life without imagining how far I’d go to keep what belongs to me.” At that moment, the little girl spoke again in a trembling voice. “I also heard her say on the phone that after today, there wouldn’t be anyone left to stop her.” The father closed his eyes for a second, then immediately moved his daughter behind him. He did not take another step toward his wife. The distance between them now felt impossible to repair.
The father took out his phone and called security and the police without taking his eyes off his wife. She tried to move closer, but he raised one hand. “Stay right there.” The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around her father and began crying with relief because he had finally believed her. He crouched down and hugged her, trembling as he realized that just a few minutes later, he would have gotten into that truck and might never have come back. As workers from the estate began approaching from a distance, the wife stood frozen on the gravel with no explanation left to give. The story ends with the father looking at his daughter with pain and gratitude, realizing that the person who saved his life was not an adult, but his own little girl, who had the courage to stop him before he got into the truck.
