After they had walked for a little while, Daniel asked, “Noah… where is your father?” The boy lowered his head. “I don’t know.” Daniel looked at him. “Your mom never told you?” Noah shook his head. “I asked her before. She only said my dad didn’t know I existed.” Daniel went quiet. After a moment, he asked, “How old are you?” “Nine.” Daniel stopped for a second. Emily had disappeared from his life almost ten years ago. He looked at Noah a little longer but did not dare let himself think any further. The boy urged him, “Can we hurry? Mom passed out twice this morning.” Daniel’s expression changed immediately. “Is she home alone?” Noah nodded. “She said she just needed to rest. But I’m scared.” Daniel tightened his grip on the photograph. “Let’s hurry.”
The moment the apartment door opened, Noah rushed inside in panic. “Mom?” No answer. Emily was lying on her side near the edge of the bed, one arm hanging toward the floor, her breathing faint. “Mom! Mom, wake up!” Noah shook her, but Emily barely responded. Daniel rushed over, checked for a pulse, and called out, “Emily! Can you hear me?” Her eyes opened slightly, but her gaze was unfocused. Daniel did not wait. He bent down and lifted her into his arms. She felt so light that it stopped him for a second. Noah ran after him, crying. “Is my mom going to be okay?” Daniel held Emily tightly against his chest. “She’s going to be okay. Noah, open the door for me. Hurry.” As Daniel carried her out, Emily stirred faintly. She stared at his face for a long moment, as if she could not tell what was real and what was a dream. Then her lips trembled. “Daniel…?” He looked down at her. “Emily, I’m here.” Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes. “Is it really you… or am I dreaming?” Daniel’s throat tightened. “You’re not dreaming. I’m here.” Emily barely managed to whisper, “I thought… I’d never see you again…” before going limp in his arms.
Daniel barely left Emily’s side on the way to the hospital. Noah sat beside her, holding her hand with both of his. “Mom, don’t sleep anymore… I’m scared.” Daniel kept calling her name. “Emily, open your eyes. Can you hear me? Stay awake.” As soon as they reached the emergency room, the medical team rushed her inside. Noah tried to follow, but a nurse stopped him. “You have to wait here.” He burst into tears. Daniel knelt in front of him. “Look at me. Your mom is exactly where she needs to be. The doctors are helping her.” Noah asked through his tears, “What if she dies?” Daniel froze. The question hit him harder than he expected. He pulled Noah into his arms. “Your mom is not going to die. I’m not going to let the two of you be alone anymore.” After saying it, Daniel had to turn his face away to wipe his own tears.
More than an hour later, a doctor came out. “Who is here for Emily Carter?” Daniel and Noah both jumped to their feet. The doctor explained that Emily had a severe infection and was dangerously exhausted because she had delayed treatment for too long. They had brought her in just in time. Her condition was still serious, but she was stable for the moment. Noah immediately threw his arms around Daniel and sobbed. Daniel closed his eyes and held the boy tightly. When they were finally allowed to see Emily, she was still very weak. She opened her eyes, saw Noah sitting beside the bed, then looked at Daniel standing behind him. She stared at him as if she still could not believe he was really there. EMILY: “Why are you here? Thank you for saving me, but please leave. I need to rest.” Daniel placed the photograph Noah had dropped on the table. “Your son dropped this in front of me.” He paused. “I was at that church praying for you and your child… because I thought both of you were dead.” Emily looked at the photograph, then at Noah. Daniel stayed silent for a few seconds before finally asking the question that had been eating at him since he met the boy. “Emily… who is Noah’s father?”
Emily turned her face away. “What does it matter now?” Daniel stepped closer. “Because he’s nine. And you disappeared from my life almost ten years ago.” Emily looked at him, tears starting to fall. “You really don’t know?” “Know what?” She broke down. “Noah is your son.” Daniel went completely still. He looked at the boy, who had fallen asleep in the chair, then back at Emily. “Say that again.” Emily’s voice cracked. “He’s your son.” Daniel was hurt and angry at the same time. “Then why didn’t you tell me?” Emily snapped back immediately. “I tried!” She pointed at herself. “I called you. I went to your house. I sent letters. I stood outside your office when I was visibly pregnant. You never came out. Not once.” Daniel shook his head over and over. “I never got any of it.” Emily looked at him bitterly. “Your mother did. She came to see me.”
Daniel went silent. Emily explained that a few months into her pregnancy, Daniel’s mother, Victoria Harrison, came to find her. She gave Emily money and said Daniel already knew about the baby but wanted nothing to do with it. “She even gave me a letter with your signature on it.” Daniel answered immediately, “I never wrote that.” Emily said, “I heard your voice too.” Daniel frowned. “My voice?” “A recording. You said you never wanted to see me again, and you didn’t want that child in your life.” Daniel’s face went pale. “Emily, I never said that.” Her voice broke. “I heard it with my own ears.” Daniel stared at her for a long moment, then took out his phone. He opened an old photograph he had kept for almost ten years. It showed a death certificate with the name Emily Carter, stating that she had died shortly after giving birth. Emily stared at the screen, frozen. Daniel spoke with a trembling voice. “My father gave me this. He told me you gave birth, there were complications, and neither you nor the baby survived.” Emily covered her mouth. Daniel continued, “I left flowers at a grave with your name on it for three years.”
Emily began crying silently. “So… both of us were lied to?” Daniel did not answer right away. He only looked at her, his eyes red. Then Emily remembered an old envelope she had kept among her belongings. Noah later brought it from home. The moment Daniel saw the date, he said, “I was in London on this date.” He turned the envelope over and recognized the seal of the Harrison family’s law office. Daniel immediately called Thomas Reed, his father’s former attorney. Thomas went silent for a long time when Daniel mentioned Emily. Daniel asked him directly, “My parents did this, didn’t they? The letter, the death certificate, the recording?” Finally, Thomas sighed. “Daniel… your father believed Emily would ruin your future. Your mother was the one who handled it personally.” Daniel gripped the phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. Thomas admitted that the recording had been pieced together from different things Daniel had said in unrelated conversations. One story had been created for Emily—that Daniel had abandoned her and the baby. Another had been created for Daniel—that Emily and the child were dead.
A few weeks later, Emily was healthy enough to leave the hospital. A DNA test confirmed that Daniel was Noah’s biological father. But Daniel and Emily did not immediately get back together as if nothing had happened. Too many years had been stolen from them. There was too much anger and too many unanswered questions to disappear after a single apology. Daniel simply began by taking Noah to school, driving Emily to her follow-up appointments, and being there whenever she needed him. One evening, Noah fell asleep on the couch. Emily looked at Daniel and said quietly, “There were nights when I watched him sleep and hated you so much I wanted to forget you even existed.” Daniel replied, “And I spent years standing in front of a fake grave, believing I had lost both of you.” Emily lowered her head and cried. Daniel did not touch her. A little while later, Noah woke up, rubbed his eyes, and asked, “Dad… are you taking me to school tomorrow?” Both Daniel and Emily froze. It was the first time Noah had ever called him that. Daniel turned his face away for a second to hide his tears, then answered, “Yeah. Tomorrow, the day after that… for as long as you still want me to.” Emily watched the two of them, tears falling again, but this time she smiled. They could never get back the almost ten years they had lost. But from that day forward, none of them had to live with a lie in place of the truth ever again.
