Emily had barely turned away when Daniel shot to his feet. “Emily, wait. What did you mean about the truth about the baby?” She stopped, but did not turn around. “Are you sure you want to know?” Daniel looked at the child in her arms. “He’s my son.” Emily gave a bitter smile. “Exactly. And because he is your son, everything changed this morning.” Daniel stepped closer. “What are you talking about?” Emily pulled a thick envelope from her bag and placed it on the table in front of him. The name of a major Manhattan law firm was printed across the front. Daniel frowned the moment he saw it. “What is this?” Emily replied, “The reason I called you thirteen times today.”

Daniel opened the envelope. After reading only the first few lines, he looked up sharply. “Carter Holdings?” Emily held his gaze. “My last name being Carter was never a coincidence.” Daniel stared at her in disbelief. During their three years of marriage, Emily had only ever said that her parents were gone and that she had almost no contact with the rest of her family. The truth was that her grandfather, William Carter, had founded Carter Holdings, a powerful corporation that owned major real estate, hotels, and investment funds across New York. Emily had walked away from the family after a bitter conflict because her grandfather opposed her marriage to Daniel. “I chose you, so I gave all of it up.” Daniel looked stunned. “Then why now…?” Emily looked down at the baby. “Because he left one final condition in his will. When I had my first child, my mother’s share of the estate would pass back to me and the baby.”

Daniel looked down at the documents again. The numbers made his hand go still. It was not just money. Emily and the baby had inherited enough shares to control Carter Holdings. Daniel murmured, “You’re saying… he’s the heir?” Emily answered, “Not just him. Both of us.” Then Daniel realized something even more unsettling. The small investment firm where he worked as an executive had actually been acquired by Carter Holdings three months earlier. Daniel looked at Emily. “You knew about my company?” She nodded. “The lawyers told me this morning. I came here to tell you that starting next week, you’ll be reporting directly to the new board.” Daniel stood frozen. Emily glanced toward Vanessa. “I just didn’t expect to find out what your ‘overtime’ really looked like.”

Daniel immediately lowered his voice. “Emily, what’s going on with Vanessa isn’t what you think.” Emily looked at the expensive gift box on the table, then back at him. “Don’t insult me again by lying.” Daniel stepped closer. “I was wrong. I know that. But we have a child. We can go home and talk about this.” Emily laughed bitterly. “When you threw water in my face in front of the entire restaurant, did you remember that we had a child then?” Daniel went silent. Emily continued, “Do you think what I said was some threat because of money? No. I just wanted you to understand how much you had just thrown away.” Daniel looked at her. “Are you going to divorce me?” Emily did not answer right away. “This morning, I came here planning to tell you that we would never have to worry about money again. I thought you’d be happy. I was even going to tell you that I wanted to use it to build a better life for the three of us.”

At that moment, an older man in an expensive suit entered the restaurant with two attorneys. Daniel recognized him immediately: Jonathan Reed, chairman of Carter Holdings, a man Daniel had spent months trying and failing to get a meeting with. Jonathan walked straight toward Emily. “Miss Carter, we’ve been waiting for you at the office. We couldn’t reach you, so I came here personally.” Daniel’s face went pale. Jonathan looked at the baby and gave a slight bow. “And this must be our young heir.” Only then did Daniel fully believe everything Emily had said. Vanessa quietly stood and prepared to leave, but Daniel no longer even looked at her. His eyes remained on Emily. “What are you going to do?” Emily answered calmly, “First, I’m taking my son home. Second, I’m speaking to a divorce attorney.”

Daniel immediately stepped toward her. “Emily, don’t make a decision like that over one mistake.” She stopped. “One mistake?” Emily looked at him, water still clinging to her hair. “You lied to me. You left your wife and child at home to meet another woman. And when I showed up, you didn’t apologize. You threw water in my face and told me to get out.” Daniel lowered his head. Emily continued, “Don’t think the worst thing that happened tonight is that you lost a wealthy wife. If I still had nothing in my bank account, I would still leave you.” Daniel looked up. He had no answer. Emily looked down at the baby. “The money only made you understand the consequences faster.”

A few weeks later, Emily filed for divorce. Daniel was still allowed to see his son, and she never used her money to keep him from being a father. But at work, everything changed completely. Daniel walked into his first board meeting under the new ownership and saw Emily sitting at the head of the table with Jonathan Reed beside her. He stopped in the doorway. Emily showed no satisfaction or revenge. She simply said, “Sit down, Daniel. This is business.” After the meeting, Daniel quietly asked, “Can you really look at me every day like nothing happened?” Emily replied, “No. But I can learn not to let what you did control the rest of my life.” Daniel looked at the baby sleeping in the stroller beside her. “Do I still have a chance with you?” Emily was silent for a few seconds before answering, “You have the rest of your life to prove that you deserve to be his father. But as my husband… you already had that chance.” She pushed the stroller away. Daniel remained standing alone. And only then did he finally understand what Emily had meant in the restaurant: the truth about the baby was not that he belonged to another man. It was that from the day he was born, Emily finally had enough power to stop enduring the man she had once given up her entire family to choose.
